Cookie Policy
A short list, because there isn't much to list. Two cookies keep the site working. Anything beyond that is off until you choose otherwise, and stays off if you decline.

The short version
- Two necessary cookies. One remembers your cookie choice, one remembers your theme. Neither identifies you.
- Optional analytics, off by default.Nothing is set until you accept, and declining sets nothing at all.
- No advertising cookies. No pixels, no retargeting, no cross-site tracking, no data sold to anyone.
- Declining is one click. The same single click as accepting. We don't hide the reject button behind a settings screen.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep. On the next visit, the browser hands it back, which is how a site remembers something about you between page loads - your theme, or the fact that you already dismissed a banner.
Cookies aren't inherently a privacy problem. What matters is what's stored in them and who gets to read them. This page tells you both.
Strictly necessary cookies
These can't be switched off, because the site can't do what you asked without them. There's a small irony in the first one: we need a cookie to remember that you didn't want cookies.

Our hosting provider may also set short-lived cookies for security and load balancing. These carry no personal information and exist only to deliver the page you requested.
Optional cookies
These are set only if you accept them in the consent banner. If you decline, or simply never answer, they are never set - the scripts that would create them don't load at all.

What we get from these is aggregate: page views, rough geography, device type. It tells us whether something we published was worth writing. It isn't tied to your name, and we don't use it to target you with anything.
What we don't use
- Advertising or retargeting cookies.
- Social media tracking pixels.
- Cross-site or cross-device profiling.
- Fingerprinting, or any other technique designed to work around cookie controls.
- Cookies whose data is sold or shared with data brokers.
If that list ever changes, this page changes with it and the consent banner will ask you again rather than assuming your earlier answer still applies.
Third-party content
Some articles embed video from YouTube or Vimeo. Nothing from those services loads until you click play - no scripts, no cookies, no requests. Until then you're looking at a static thumbnail served from our own site.
Once you press play, the provider loads and may set its own cookies under its own policy, which we don't control. The trade is deliberate: you get the video only when you ask for it, and the rest of the site stays clean.
Managing your choice
To change the decision you made in the banner, clear this site's cookies in your browser settings. The banner reappears on your next visit and you can answer differently.
Every major browser also lets you block or delete cookies globally, usually under Settings → Privacy. Blocking strictly necessary cookies won't break the site, but it does mean your theme and your cookie choice are forgotten each time you leave.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a decision to decline optional cookies and don't ask again. We honour it whether or not the law where you live requires us to.
Changes to this policy
If we add a cookie or change what an existing one does, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Adding anything in a new category will re-prompt you for consent rather than quietly inheriting your previous answer.
